and what to filter out. A warning cue prior to an event can be used to direct attention and improve performance when response to an imperative target is required. Various studies have suggested that warning cues may induce a change in alertness or modulate temporal anticipation of an upcoming event. The current literature presents similar effects for these two functions; hence, effects of a warning cue are sometimes attributed to changes in the state of alertness and in other cases, to voluntary orienting of attention in time. In this article we will discuss whether temporal orienting of attention and alertness are dissociable.

The noradrenergic alpha2 agonist clonidine modulates behavioural and neuroanatomical correlates of human attentional orienting and alerting.

We examined whether the known noradrenergic attenuation of the alerting effect (the beneficial effect of a warning cue) results from an underlying effect of noradrenaline on temporal orienting (orienting toward a particular moment in time). Following a within-subjects, counterbalanced design, 10 healthy human volunteers received placebo, 200 microg clonidine or 1 mg guanfacine (alpha2 agonists)...

Executive attention impairment in first-episode schizophrenia

BACKGROUND We compared the attention abilities of a group of first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients and a group of healthy participants using the Attention Network Test (ANT), a standard procedure that estimates the functional state of three neural networks controlling the efficiency of three different attentional behaviors, i.e., alerting (achieving and maintaining a state of high sensitiv...

A week-long meditation retreat decouples behavioral measures of the alerting and executive attention networks

PREVIOUS STUDIES HAVE EXAMINED THE INFLUENCE OF MEDITATION ON THREE FUNCTIONALLY DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF ATTENTION: executive control, alerting, and orienting. These studies have consistently found that meditation training improves both executive attention and alerting, but there has not been a consistent and clear effect of meditation training on orienting. In addition, while previous studies ...

Supramodal executive control of attention

The human attentional system can be subdivided into three functional networks of alerting, orienting, and executive control. Although these networks have been extensively studied in the visuospatial modality, whether the same mechanisms are deployed across different sensory modalities remains unclear. In this study we used the attention network test for the visuospatial modality, in addition to...

Attention network impairments in patients with focal frontal or parietal lesions.

Recently, research on attention has focused on 3 networks that are linked to separate brain regions, i.e. orienting, alerting, and executive control. The attention network test (ANT) is one of the methods to measure the three attention functions. However, neuropsychological investigations have not examined the anatomical disassociation of different attention networks with the same task. We comp...
